Representing the post-modern underground "trim" scene among California shapers, Jeff McCallum of McCallum Surfboards has, in his 15 years of shaping, earned an international reputation among lovers of the beautiful, unusual board. He started out in the purest shaper tradition: sweeping and packing boards in Chris Christenson's shaping workshop. Working with him for 3 years, he learned every step of the board-building process, and now hand-builds every surfboard in his San Diego workshop. Building 6 boards a week, all by hand, his watchword is quality, not quantity. Influenced by shapers such as Chris Christenson, Skip Frye, William Riedel, Larry Crow, Bob Simmons and George Greenough (some of whom he has worked with), Jeff is back in France for a very limited shaping session.
